Three clean energy and transport companies – Octopus Energy, Uber, and BYD – have launched an initiative aimed at accelerating the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) among UK Uber drivers.
The partnership, unveiled at Uber’s annual climate event, Go Get Zero, will offer what is being described as the country’s cheapest EV charging bundle.
Under the new scheme, Octopus Energy will install up to 1,000 free home chargers for Uber drivers who purchase a BYD electric vehicle and sign up for the Intelligent Octopus Go tariff, a specialist energy plan for EV owners. This tariff will allow drivers to charge their vehicles for as little as 2p per mile, making it approximately six times cheaper than running a petrol-powered car. When considering the free home charger and savings from charging, the cost of operating an EV could be up to ten times lower than a petrol car for Uber drivers.
In addition to the free home chargers, Uber drivers using this bundle will receive an 8% discount on Octopus Electroverse, a charging service that gives access to over 850,000 charging points globally through a single card and app.
BYD, now the largest global producer of electric vehicles, offers a range of affordable and technologically advanced EVs that Uber drivers can use to complete zero-emission trips, contributing to cleaner air on UK roads.
Greg Jackson, CEO of Octopus Energy, stated, “Octopus leads the way on EV charging, and it’s exciting to partner with Uber and BYD to bring cheap, convenient, clean transport to thousands of Uber drivers and hundreds of thousands of riders. With Octopus’s smart charging technology, BYD’s outstanding cars, and Uber’s leadership on green mobility, the unstoppable transport revolution is well and truly underway.”

Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi highlighted the rapid shift towards electric vehicles on the Uber platform, noting that more than 180,000 EVs are now in use, with drivers transitioning to electric five times faster than the average motorist. “The new features and partnerships being announced today are designed to accelerate electrification and make sustainable choices easier for drivers, consumers, and merchants. Climate is a team sport, and we all must double down on this work together,” Khosrowshahi added.
This initiative underscores the companies’ commitment to reducing emissions in the transport sector, providing affordable and sustainable mobility solutions for Uber drivers and riders across the UK.
